About Warrior Woman Republic

Warrior Woman Republic is a movement for people ready to reclaim their voices, inhabit their bodies, and live with greater agency. Through yoga, martial arts, self-defense, and embodied practice, we turn personal transformation into collective change.

We reject the false choices between strong and soft, fierce and compassionate, disciplined and free. We believe in a power expansive enough to hold courage and vulnerability, ferocity and flow, the scars we carry and the lives we are still creating.

Rooted in the safety and empowerment of women, Warrior Woman Republic welcomes people across the gender spectrum who are ready to move beyond the world’s “shoulds” and become more fully themselves.

Meet Angela Meyer

For more than 20 years, Angela has worked at the intersection of embodiment, courage, care, and social change—as a yoga teacher, martial artist, chaplain, storyteller, and international safety advisor.

I know what it means to feel afraid in the world. As a child, I was so frozen by fear that I did not speak outside my home until sixth grade. I longed to participate, play, and be seen, but I learned instead to stay quiet, compliant, and small. My life’s work has grown from the long journey of reclaiming the voice, body, and freedom I once believed I did not have.

That journey led me to Joseph’s House, a residential AIDS hospice serving people experiencing homelessness in Washington, DC. I initially arrived as a volunteer and ultimately spent more than a decade within that community, serving in roles that included resident caregiver, chaplain, volunteer director, and staff member. Joseph’s House taught me how courage and vulnerability coexist—and how healing is inseparable from relationship, dignity, and belonging.

Yoga first became a way to remain grounded within the intensity of hospice work. It grew into more than 20 years of teaching, program leadership, teacher training, and community building. I served as Yoga Director at VIDA Fitness and Stroga, developed yoga teacher trainings and programming, taught across Equinox’s DMV locations, and helped build yoga programs through the YMCA. I have also taught internationally in Kenya, Guatemala, Pakistan, Brazil, Thailand, Costa Rica, and beyond.

Martial arts entered my life through Budokon, where I discovered the exhilaration of striking, sparring, grappling, being terrible at something new—and loving it anyway. That beginning grew into years of dedicated training and competition in self-defense, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, and MMA. I am a Krav Maga black belt, Budokon brown belt, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt.

Martial arts changed far more than my physical strength. They taught me to trust my instincts, take up space, use my voice, and remain present under pressure. Those lessons became the foundation of Warrior Woman Republic and my approach to helping others reclaim safety and agency in their own bodies.

Professionally, I spent eight years as Empowerment Trainer with Global Journalist Security and now work internationally as a Safety Advisor and Hostile Environment Trainer for Reuters. I train journalists and humanitarian professionals in personal safety, situational awareness, de-escalation, emotional resilience, and decision-making under pressure. As a Sports Envoy through the U.S. Department of State, I have also worked with women and girls in countries including Pakistan, Kenya, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, Poland, and Mexico.

My work is also shaped by a Master of Theological Studies from Iliff School of Theology, end-of-life care training through the Metta Institute, Buddhist chaplaincy studies at the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care, and my current graduate studies in Counseling Psychology at Sofia University. I am also a Wayfinder-trained life coach, actor, and writer.

My mission is to help others—women and men alike—unleash the freedom to be who they were born to be.

Your voice is not something you have to earn. Your body is not something you have to overcome. Your freedom is yours to reclaim.
